Of course, we are still learning details about their courtship
It’s actually quite remarkable that we are able to learn from their relationship, given how private they keep it. There are even mixed accounts as to when the couple met, and how long they knew each other before they became involved. (Some outlets say they met in London, while others say they met in Toronto.)
Their privacy is admirable …
In a time when everything is splashed across the internet, it’s refreshing to see a couple that keeps their love life under wraps. Granted, being public figures and having your life dissected in the tabloids probably makes the idea of a private relationship more appealing. But we can all take a cue from this couple and keep our intimate affairs behind closed doors. Especially when the harsh critics come knocking …
As is the Prince’s show of support
Unfortunately, the couple hasn’t exactly been living a fairy-tale romance. Media in the U.K. was quick to start ripping Markle apart when rumors of the relationship surfaced. Tabloid criticism has been both racist and sexist, and mostly centered around the idea that Queen Elizabeth won’t approve of a union between Markle and Prince Harry.
The commentary was so harsh, that Prince Harry issued an official statement asking the press to leave Markle alone! And who doesn’t like when a guy stands up for the woman he loves?
That one big rule
Markle revealed in a recent cover story for Vanity Fair what helps the couple at the end of the day — especially when criticism of their relationship runs a-muck. The key: Not getting caught up in the frenzy of it all, and taking time for themselves.
“We’re two people who are really happy and in love,” she tells the publication. “I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time.”
Squeezing in alone time is important
And we aren’t just talking about the prince whisking Markle away to Botswana for her 36th birthday this past August, either. We’re talking about the run-of-the-mill “normal people” dates they have when they’re together.
Reports of the duo visiting a couple low-key spots in Toronto and staying in to cook dinner together are a great reminder that every couple should have date nights. (No matter how long the couple has been together.)
The good they do together is wonderful
This couple also shares a love for giving back. In fact, Markle was honored this past year for her humanitarian work, something both she and her main squeeze are passionate about. And as we have learned from Harry’s brother and sister-in-law, Prince William and Kate Middleton, giving back together makes a couple happier.
Will their relationship rule help their romance last?
Time will tell if the couple’s rule of keeping their relationship in perspective will result in a happily-ever-after. Rumors of wedding bells have been swirling for a while now, even with continued tabloid criticism. But it’s already pretty clear, if these two can keep doing what they’re doing, we’ll be taking cues from their relationship for a very long time.
